“Gender and Society in Contemporary India” is a four-week-long master level intensive summer course that aims to provide an overview of issues related to gender and sexuality in India from a feminist perspective. The diversity of India will be a lens through which the course will explore issues of contemporary interest. Students will do readings, watch films and have some field trips to understand the reality presented.
This intensive course includes daily lectures, discussions, assignments, preparatory readings, and the writing of a term paper. The course, open to students from all disciplines at the member universities of NCI, is organized by the Study in India Program of the University of Hyderabad.
On completion of the course students should demonstrate an interdisciplinary understanding of the diverse gender issues in contemporary India. They should be able to move away from existing stereotypes and critically recognise and evaluate patriarchal social practices operating within the Indian context.

On completion of the course students should demonstrate an interdisciplinary understanding of the diverse gender issues in contemporary India. They should be able to move away from existing stereotypes and critically recognise and evaluate patriarchal social practices.
Upon successful completion of the summer course, the students receive a grade transcript from the University of Hyderabad and a certificate along with supplementary documents from the Nordic Centre in India that can award them 7.5 ECTS at their respective home university. For students who wish pursue 10 ECTS it is also possible to do additional assignments during the same period of time. Since the course is designed to suit students from Nordic universities with European and national credit systems, students are requested to consult the International offices for information about how to translate and register the course credits at their home university.
The course has four educational components:
a) Lectures – approximately 15-17 classes. Each class will be of two hours duration on a specific theme per day. A few additional lectures may be organized on demand on topics of interest for the students
b) Interactive Discussion Sessions – 4 sessions of two hours plus movie/documentary screenings
c) Assignment presentations by students: 4-5 afternoon sessions during the fourth week.
The following themes would be considered as part of the programme:
a) Gender and Society in Contemporary India: A Sociological Introduction
b) Gender in the context of Race, Tribe, Caste, and Class in India
c) Indian Feminisms and the Women’s Movement in India
d) Gender, Legislation, and the Politics of Religion in India
e) Gender and Public Health (additional focus on gendered implications of Covid 19)
f) Gendered Violence
g) Queer Politics in India
h) Gender and Development
i) Gender and Labour
j) Gendered Representations in Mass Media
The primary assignment will be a final paper of 4500 words to be submitted at the end of the course and presented in the last week of the programme. Students opting for 10 ECTS could additionally write a 2000 word review of a relevant text/book. Since the course is designed to suit students from Nordic universities with European and national credit systems, students are requested to consult the International offices for information about how to translate and register the course credits at their home university.

The online programme costs Euro 500 payable to the University of Hyderabad. The relevant payment instructions for online transfer of the course fees will be sent to the students planning to attend the programme.
Lectures will be held between 3 to 5 pm IST. Students are encouraged to attend the lectures via the platform provided so that they can interact with the resource persons. If students cannot participate in the lectures, a recording of the same will be provided.
