‘Bridging Classrooms, Bridging Futures’ is NCI’s Teaching Practice Placement Programme that is open to teacher training students (both ECEC and Primary/Secondary) from NCI member universities. This three month programme (time period customisable) is a unique initiative designed to offer teacher training students from the Nordic region an unparalleled opportunity to engage with India’s diverse and dynamic educational system. Participants will get an opportunity to learn about and experience the landscape of education delivery in India. The students will immerse themselves in hands-on teaching experiences, mentorship sessions, lectures, field visits (Kolkata, Shantiniketan and Guwahati), interaction with practitioners, and enriching cultural exploration in the city of Kolkata especially through the lens of the magnificent festival of Durga Puja. Students will leave with a greater knowledge of how to operate in a multicultural setting, learn skills teaching a different curriculum in a diverse cultural environment, and will be more adaptable to new situations. Students will also impart new teaching methods and techniques to the school they are working in, making the programme a mutually beneficial arrangement for all involved.
The programme includes an initial one week intensive orientation with lectures, field visits, assignments (if required by their home university) , and preparatory readings. This part of the programme will be held in partnership with the Department of Education of St. Xavier's College (Autonomous), Kolkata (https://www.sxccal.edu/faculty-education-department/). Students will then continue to spend three to four weeks at Heritage School Kolkata and Mongrace Montessori School, along with visits to Guwahati and Shantiniketan (specifically for ECEC teachers).

Students participating in the programme are responsible for arranging their accommodation in Kolkata. Many international students prefer to secure housing through short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb, which offer flexibility, privacy, and a wide range of options across neighbourhoods. This approach allows students to select accommodation that best matches their budget, lifestyle, and preferred commute.
Kolkata offers a relatively affordable cost of living compared to many other major Indian cities. Daily commuting is facilitated by an extensive public transport network, including metro, buses, taxis, and app-based ride services. Students will find easy access to essential amenities such as grocery stores, cafés, healthcare facilities, and banking services.
The programme team is happy to provide general guidance on neighbourhood selection, commuting considerations, and practical aspects of living in Kolkata. However, accommodation arrangements and contractual agreements remain the responsibility of the student.
