Sustainability and Community Development in North-East India

Sustainable Development Goals: Lessons from India

Study period: 18 January – 12 February 2027 (4 Weeks with an optional extension)

The Nordic Centre in India, in collaboration with Assam Don Bosco University, offer a four-week experiential academic programme exploring sustainability and community development in Assam and North-East India.

The programme will bring together an approximately equal number of students from Nordic universities and India. Through lectures, guided exposure visits, group work, discussions and NGO-based engagement, participants will explore how sustainability and community development are shaped by local knowledge, livelihoods, social institutions, cultural contexts and environmental realities.

Assam and the wider North-East provide a distinctive setting in which to examine the relationship between communities, development and sustainability. Programme themes will include Indigenous knowledge, livelihoods, environmental vulnerability, gender and inclusion, and the role of civil society organisations.

Students may complete the four-week core programme or apply to continue with an optional practice placement until 16 April 2027.
