Sustainable Development Goals: Lessons from India

Sustainable Development Goals: Lessons from India

Study period: January 2027 (two weeks)

Through NCI’s agreement with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), students from NCI member universities can participate in the International Winter School on Sustainable Development Goals: Lessons from India.

Based in Mumbai—one of the world’s most vibrant, rapidly growing and deeply unequal megacities—the two-week programme offers students an exceptional opportunity to explore some of the most urgent challenges facing societies today.

Students will examine India’s experience of working towards the Sustainable Development Goals, engaging critically with questions of social policy, governance, inequality and sustainable development. The programme goes beyond the classroom, encouraging participants to analyse the social, political and economic forces shaping development in India and to consider how lessons from the Indian context may inform global approaches to sustainability.

Academic learning is complemented by a lively social and cultural programme. Students will meet peers from around the world, take part in field visits and cultural immersion activities, and experience the energy and diversity of Mumbai. From its historic neighbourhoods, bustling markets and celebrated food culture to its festivals, coastline and surrounding natural landscapes, Mumbai provides an extraordinary setting for learning both inside and outside the classroom.

This programme is particularly suited to students interested in sustainable development, public policy, social justice, governance, international development and contemporary India.
